Adventures in Songwriting: Translating 'Delgeç'

Back to Original Writings

Another attempt at translating a hit from the 2000's-era classics of Turkish rock: this time it's Delgeç from Şebnem Ferah's seminal Can Kırıkları. Şebnem's a lot more metaphorical in her lyrics than Mor ve Ötesi who I translated last time[1]"Adventures in Songwriting: Translating 'Bir Derdim Var'", Mar 2026; I've taken appropriate licence to try to convey the meaning while retaining what I can of poetic meter.

This is not a transliteration.

The reference track

Gel bir parçam ol, kanımdan, canımdan
Tear a piece off me, take a corner of my heart

Gel bir parça al, ekmeğimden suyumdan
Take your pound of flesh, tear my bread and me apart

Ben zaten düşmüşüm, kaldırımlar yatağım olmuş
Already down and out, the sidewalk as my place of rest

Gel, bir de sen vur; hadi gel, bir de sen vur
Go 'head and kick me, while I'm down come and kick me

Ben zaten düşmüşüm, içim dışım korku dolmuş
Already down and out, fear building up within my chest

Gel, bir de sen vur; hadi gel
Go 'head and kick me, while I'm down

Nasıl olsa alıştım ben, bu sert ruzgârlara
Somehow I thought I'd gotten used to walking into the wind

Bu sert iklimli ıssız hayata
Cutting at me 'til I'm paper thin

Delgeç gibi deleceksin, sen de ruhumu
Then you fold round like a holepunch, shredding at my life

Biliyorum durma, gel
You know you want to twist the knife

Bir de sen vur, bir de sen vur
Come and kick me, while I'm down come and kick me

Gel, bir de sen vur; bir de sen vur
Twist the knife, come and kick me; while I'm down come and kick me
